More and more companies and regulators are concerned about attacks on the nation’s power grid, and that why many are investing millions in security.

The Grid Security Now website has researched physical attacks on the electric grid for years, and it estimates there have been more than 1,000 attacks since 2010.

They range from vandalism to elaborate operations.

“While a variety of violent extremist movements have attempted to assault American critical infrastructure throughout modern history, the Department of Homeland Security and other national security authorities have recently sounded the alarm that U.S.-based violent extremists have developed ‘credible, specific plans’ to attack critical infrastructure,” said a 2022 report  by the George Washington University Program on Extremism and the National Counter Terrorism Innovation, Technology and Education Center.

The report said that, between 2016 and 2022, plots targeting energy systems “dramatically increased.”
